Joomla! 1.5 Native

With over 100 installations of the 1.1.0 version, no reported problems, and no problems noticed by myself, I am giving version 1.1.0 the Net Guy Steve Seal of Approval (no actual seals were harmed in the making of the Seal of Approval).  If you have installed the 1.1.0 Beta version, there is no need to install this one.   No changes were needed between the beta and the final release.  Of course, if it makes you feel better to have a zip file with a newer time stamp, it won't hurt anything to remove the old installation and install this one.

New In Version 1.1.0

  • Optional Listener Count Display
  • There are now two different operating modes
    • Single Playlist Mode *New*
      When operating in single playlist mode, only a single row of listen buttons will be displayed.  If a visitor clicks on a listen button and fails to connect to your primary stream, they will automatically connect to your secondary stream.  This is ideal if you are using a second stream only as a backup in case your primary stream goes down or if you have added a second stream to accommodate additional listeners.
    • Multiple Playlist Mode (The old behavior)
      A separate single-entry playlist is generated for each of your two streams.  Visitors will see two sets of listen buttons, and will be able to select which of the two streams to listen to.  This is ideal if you are running one high speed stream and one lower speed stream.

Joomla! 1.5 Native

A new version of the NGS Shoutcast Module has been released.   While I believe it to be stable (it's the one I am using on this site), I am classifying it as beta until a few more people have had a chance to put it to use and verify that there are no issues.  

New In Version 1.1.0

Joomla! 1.5 Native

With the end of life for Joomla! 1.0.x quickly approaching, I was recently faced with the task of planning to migrate a number of sites I maintain.  Among them are two different sites for Shoutcast broadcasters.  I have always been a big fan of Silent Joe's Internet Radio Module and was sad to learn that there is not a 1.5 Native version available, and no word on when--if ever--one will be available..  I looked at a few other alternatives, but in every case they either didn't work (resulting in an error immediately upon installation) or didn't really do what I wanted done.

Finding no suitable alternatives, I decided to take on the task of updating Joesph's module to be compliant with the new practices for modules in Joomla! 1.5.  The result of those efforts are what I have dubbed the NGS Shoutcast Module.

The NGS Shoutcast Module is now available for public download.  Based on the popular Internet Radio created by Silent Joe for Joomla! 1.0.x, the NGS Shoutcast Module has the following features:

  • Joomla! 1.5 Native Compatibility - Code was updated to be fully 1.5 compatible.
  • Quick and easy setup - Just install the module and enter your Shoutcast server URL and port.
  • Support for both a high speed and a low speed server.
  • Visitors are presented with graphical listen buttons for the four major media players including:
    • Windows Media Player
    • WinAMP
    • RealPlayer
    • iTunes
  • Optional display of current song and artist information
  • Multi-Lingual Support  - Text output by the module is no longer hard-coded into the module.  All text is now in language files.  This will make it extremely easy to release support for Non-English langauges going forward.  (If you are interested in helping with translations for other languages, please feel free to contact me.
  • Hosted on JOOMLACODE.ORG to facilitate bug reporting, feature requests, and coordination between multiple contributors.
